Class 12 Science Sees a Decade of Rising Female Participation

A comprehensive analysis of data from 25 school boards covering 2010 to 2023 has identified significant changes in the gender distribution of students who passed their Class 12 Board exams in the science stream.
Over this period, the percentage of female students in the science stream rose notably, from 38.22% in 2010 to 45.53% in 2023. Simultaneously, the proportion of male students in the same stream fell from 62% to 54%.
This shift is further underscored by examining the overall distribution of girls among those who completed their Class 12 education. The proportion of girls pursuing science has shown a significant increase from 31% in 2010 to a promising 40% in 2023, indicating a growing interest and active participation of female students in this field.
In contrast, the percentage of girls selecting the commerce stream has significantly declined, dropping from 20% in 2010 to 12% in 2023, drawing attention to this negative trend. Additionally, the representation of girls in the arts stream experienced a slight decrease, falling from 46% to 45% over the same period.
