Within three years of its inception, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was founded in 1988, and the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was started in the year 1991. Both the colleges acquired Deemed University status in 2003 as Dr. M.G.R. Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology (AVIT) was established in the year 1998 as an affiliated institution under the University of Madras. Later it was affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. In 2004, the institution attained the status of university under the ambit of Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (VMRF) – Deemed to be University Salem under sec.3 of UGC act 1956.AVIT is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Council of Architecture (COA), Govt of India. Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) started with Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust as the first self-financing Engineering College in Tamil Nadu in 1984 by Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan. The trust then established Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital in 1989. Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital was first recognized as a Deemed to be University by MHRD in July 2002, under section 3 of UGC Act 1956 and placed under the purview of new trust of Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER). With the dawn of Independence, the need for establishing a sound technological basis for proper industrial advancement of the country was realised. Towards the fulfilment of this need, a number of Engineering Institutions were established by several State Governments.
