Here is a detailed description of the sections that form the Duolingo exam pattern

2. Choose the original words from the list of written ones.

3. Fill in the blanks

4. Create a visual representation by writing or reading aloud.

5. Record your response while you speak out aloud.

6. Respond to a question out loud.

7. Type out a sentence while you listen to it.

Sectional Details of Duolingo Exam Pattern

There are various sections in the adaptive test of the Duolingo test format. The details of each section of the Duolingo exam format are given below.

  • C-test: You fill in missing or damaged letters in words within short passages to test your vocabulary and grammar skills.
  • Yes/No Vocabulary: Identify correctly spelled words from groups of options to test your vocabulary.

  • Dictation: Listen to short passages and type out what you hear, testing both listening and writing skills.

  • Elicited Imitation: Read and then repeat a sentence aloud, testing your reading and speaking abilities.

  • Interactive Reading: Complete tasks that focus on reading comprehension and learning from texts.

  • Interactive Listening: Listen to conversations related to university settings, focusing on listening skills, with some reading and writing tasks.

  • Extended Writing: Describe three pictures and complete two independent writing tasks based on prompts.

  • Extended Speaking: Describe a topic or image, share experiences, or make arguments for up to 90 seconds or 5 minutes, as required.

Video interview and writing test:

The duration of this section is 10 minutes. It contains the following sections:

  1. You will need to speak for 3-4 minutes on one of two topics provided by the examiner for the video interview section.

  2. For the writing section, you will write for 3-5 minutes on one of two given topics.

Duolingo English Test Question Types:

Students taking the Duolingo English Test will encounter questions based on a new format designed to assess English proficiency more accurately. Here are the key updates:

  • Fill in the Blanks: This new question type requires students to complete sentences with the correct words. Each sentence has a 20-second time limit, and there will be 6 to 9 incomplete sentences to fill.
  • Interactive Writing: This section replaces the previous "Read then Write" format. Students will write about a given topic for 5 minutes, followed by a 30-second wait for a follow-up prompt, after which they will write for an additional 3 minutes.
  • Read and Select: In this section, test takers will see English words one at a time and must decide within 5 seconds whether each word is real (selecting "yes") or not (selecting "no"). This replaces the earlier format, where students had to identify all real English words from a list.

Eligibility for the Duolingo English Test (DET)

  • General Requirements: There are no specific prerequisites for taking the DET. It is open to anyone who wishes to assess their English proficiency, regardless of age or background.
