Assam Government Unifies School Boards

On Sunday, i.e., 08/09/2024, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government had merged the School Education Board of Assam and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council to establish a unified Assam State School Education Board by NEP 2020.

As per Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam, the "new board will synchronise school education to meet the demands of the 21st century."

In a post on X, Chief Minister Biswa stated, "We have merged SEBA and AHSEC to form a unified Assam State School Education Board, which is a significant milestone in the direction of advancing our education sector to new heights. This move is in perfect alignment with the National Education Policy, 2020, ensuring that our school education meets the demands of the 21st century."

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) of the Ministry of Education aims to achieve a significant transformation in education by establishing "an education system that is rooted in Indian ethos and directly contributes to the sustainable transformation of India, or Bharat, into a vibrant and equitable knowledge society by providing high-quality education to all, thereby making India a global knowledge superpower." The five guiding pillars of access, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability are the foundation of the NEP 2020. According to the Ministry of Education, it will equip our youth with the necessary skills to confront the diverse national and global challenges of the present and future.

"In school education, the National Education Policy 2020 stresses on the core values and principle that education must develop not only the cognitive skills, that is, – both 'foundational skills' of literacy and numeracy and 'higher-order' skills such as critical thinking and problem solving – but also, social and emotional skills – also referred to as 'soft skills' -including cultural awareness and empathy, perseverance and grit, teamwork, leadership, communication, among others," as per Ministry of Education.

The policy aims and aspires to universalise pre-primary education and emphasises the attainment of foundational literacy/numeracy in primary school and beyond for all by 2025, as per the Ministry of Education.
