The Biotechnology Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras was established in 2004. The Biotechnology department comprises four key disciplines, according to the institute's 2021 data: Biological Sciences, Biomolecular Sciences, Computational Biology, and Biological Engineering.
The institute employs 33 full-time faculty members. Nearly 330 undergraduate students in dual degree programmes, 60 master's level students (MTech/MS), 200 doctorate scholars (PhD), 30 postdoctoral scholars and project employees, and 13 technical and administrative staff work in the department.
This department at IIT-Madras additionally provides two integrated dual degree programmes: a Master of Science (MS) by research programme, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme with an MTech Clinical Engineering programme that is also a multi-institutional programme, and an MTech course in Bioprocess Engineering.
The number of pupils placed fell from 34 in 2017-18 to 26 in 2018-19. The data exhibits asymmetrical behaviour, increasing to 38 in 2019-20 and then decreasing to 37 in 2020-21. However, the number of students placed increased dramatically to 54 in 2021-22.
