Ayan Gupta, an Indian student, reflects on his transformative academic journey from National Law University (NLU) Delhi to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. After completing his schooling at Amity International School, Gurugram, in 2019, he pursued a BA LLB (Hons) from NLU Delhi, graduating in 2024. Despite not originally planning to study law at Oxford, his internships and research experiences, particularly with Project39A, sparked a deep interest in understanding the gap between legal principles and real-world application. This realisation shaped his desire to further his education and contribute meaningfully to the legal field.

Securing the Prestigious Rhodes Scholarship

Ayan’s path to the Rhodes Scholarship involved four rigorous stages, starting with a written application where candidates submitted a CV, personal statement, and academic statement. These documents highlighted their story, aspirations, and course preferences at Oxford. Following this, three rounds of interviews tested candidates on their opinions, interests, and interpretations of the scholarship criteria. Ayan’s final interview took place in Bengaluru after a pre-interview dinner with other finalists and the jury, an experience designed to ease nerves and build connections. His dedication and thoughtful responses ultimately earned him the prestigious scholarship.

Adapting to Life at Oxford

Arriving in Oxford, Ayan found the city’s breathtaking architecture and welcoming community a source of comfort, despite initial challenges as an introvert. Adjusting to Oxford’s collegiate culture, which heavily emphasises socialising, was initially overwhelming. However, the support from the Rhodes House staff and senior scholars helped him navigate the city and its unique environment. He embraced the University’s rich academic and social life, balancing a demanding schedule with moments of leisure exploring Oxford’s sights and cafes.

A More Demanding Academic Experience

Oxford’s academic structure differs significantly from Indian education. Instead of traditional lectures, Ayan’s legal studies revolve around seminars and tutorials, requiring extensive pre-assigned readings and written submissions. This system demands greater independent study and critical thinking, making it far more challenging than his undergraduate education. Yet, Ayan appreciates the deeper academic focus and emphasis on research and methodology, which has reshaped his approach to the law.

A Transformative Journey

Ayan’s time at Oxford University has been a blend of challenges and rewarding experiences. The rigorous academic environment, coupled with opportunities for personal growth, has broadened his perspective as a lawyer and individual. His story reflects the power of resilience and the impact of seizing opportunities to shape a fulfilling career and life.
