There Are Only 100 MBBS Seats Available Per 10 Lakh People In Each State: NMD
Education News
The National Medical Commission's (NMC) decision to permit and distribute seats for medical education based on a State or Union Territory's population is escalating into a conflict between the South and the Centre over the right of individuals to receive healthcare and education. The following academic year marks the implementation of the order.
The states and union territories of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, and Puducherry are among those that are anticipated to be impacted by the ruling. They wish to file an appeal against what they say is unfair treatment because of their success. The number of medical seats in these States is beyond the percentage that the NMC order advised. Experts observe that in addition to these states, Sikkim, Manipur, and Himachal Pradesh will also be adversely affected.
Tamil Nadu should have about 7,600 seats, whereas Karnataka (6,700), Andhra Pradesh (5,300), Kerala (3,500), and Telangana (3,700) should have more seats, according to the new norms. Additionally, as of June 2022, Andhra Pradesh had 1,05,799 registered doctors, compared to 1,34,426 in Karnataka, 42,596 in Kerala, 1,48,217 in Tamil Nadu, and 14,999 in Telangana, according to NMC statistics.
The most recent directive was issued at the same time as Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya urged representatives of more than 50 for-profit and private hospitals or chains to begin undergraduate and graduate medical programmes during a meeting with them earlier this year.
