The current National Education Policy (NEP), which was put into effect in the state during the previous BJP administration, will be replaced by the Karnataka State Education Policy (KSEP), drafted by a 15-member committee appointed by the government. The committee, chaired by Prof. Sukhdev Thorat, a former chairman of the University Grants Commission, has been requested to turn in its findings by February 28.

The state has requested that the members thoroughly examine Karnataka's higher education system and institutions and provide recommendations for improved enrollment and educational quality in the Government Order (GO) that has been issued.

There are expertise from a range of subjects on the 15-person committee. Sanjay Kaul, a former secretary of school education for the Indian government and a retired IAS officer, has also been named a member. The committee's members include educationalist Niranjan Aradhya, Dr. Furqan Qamar of Jamia Millia University, Prof. Jagan Shankar, a former vice chancellor of Kuvempu University, and A Narayana of Azim Premji University.
