Around 40 medical colleges nationwide, the majority of which are government-run, have had their recognition revoked by the National Medical Commission (NMC), purportedly for failing to adhere to certain standards set by the body that regulates medical education. Similar action may be against almost 100 additional medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and West Bengal.
The colleges were found to be in violation of the NMC standards. During NMC inspections, several flaws were discovered regarding CCTV cameras, Aadhaar-linked biometric attendance protocols, and faculty rolls, an official source informed the news outlet Press Trust of India (PTI).
For its MBBS seats, a total of 38 medical colleges have lost recognition. Three renowned Tamil Nadu government medical colleges are among them: KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College in Trichy, Government Medical College And Hospital in Dharmapuri, and Stanley Medical College in Chennai. Assam government colleges that have lost recognition are Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMC), Barpeta. Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC and RI) in Puducherry has also lost its standing.
