In the academic year 2022–2023, a total of 25,237 students graduated from 23 IITs. Subhas Sarkar, minister of state for the Ministry of Education, presented this information before the Lok Sabha today.

Sarkar responded that under the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship scheme, they offer a competitive fellowship of up to Rs 55 lakh per scholar (including annual research grant) in five years to selected students to pursue their PhD in Indian institutions in order to retain talent in the country. MP Dhal Singh Bisen had asked whether the government had any data related to the number of IIT students who had gone abroad during the previous five years.

According to the minister, the government has approved the creation of "research parks at IITs—Madras, Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar—and IISc Bangalore to augment the research ecosystem in the country." He went on to discuss some of their more recent projects, such as the Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN), which aims to use the global talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs to supplement domestic academic resources.
