The Centre Plans To Select The President As A Visitor So That He Can Weigh In On Important IIM Appointments

The Centre on Friday submitted an amendment to the Indian Institutes of Management Act in the parliament, seeking to make the President the Visitor of all B-schools. This move has the potential to limit the autonomy given to 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) in 2017.
If the amendment is implemented, the IIM Board will lose the ability to choose and nominate chairpersons and directors for the institutes. According to the modifications, the Visitor would have the authority to choose the Chairperson to the Institute's Board of Governors and suggest a candidate for the Director positions, providing the government a voice in these key decisions.
These changes come five years after the IIM Act, which went into effect on January 31, 2018, gave all 20 business schools broad authority, including the ability to designate directors, chairpersons, and board members. The director was formerly chosen by the board, but only after receiving prior approval from the Cabinet's Appointments Committee, which is chaired by the prime minister.
