Fellowship programme in 7 IIMs equivalent to PhD degree: Education Ministry

The education ministry has emphasised that the management fellowship programme offered by the top Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is comparable to a PhD.  A memo sent on Monday by the union education ministry states that the management fellowship course is the same as a PhD granted by authorised Indian universities. The ministry made it clear that the degree is also acceptable for "superior posts and services" under the federal government.

FPM is a full-time PhD programme that includes extensive study in a variety of fields, including finance, accounting, public policy, and economics. It is anticipated that students will finish the programme in five years. The PhD programmes at the top IIMs have been offered since before 1986, however they were only launched in 2005 and 2017 at IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore, respectively. In 1975, IIM Ahmedabad became the pioneer IIM to provide a management fellowship programme.
