On July 3, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will hold its 56th convocation, with NR Narayana Murthy as the chief guest. On November 2, 1959, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was founded. A total of 2,127 students will acquire their diplomas this year. 

Aside from degrees, students will be awarded different prizes and medals in a variety of categories. IIT Kanpur will award boxer and politician MC Mary Kom its highest honorary academic degree, the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).

There are 236 PhD students, 15 MTech-PhD (joint degree), 483 MTech, 739 BTech, 21 MBA students, 16 MDes students, 51 MS (by research), 40 PGPEX-VLFM, one diploma student from IIT (DIIT), 151 MSc (2-year course) students, 18 double major students, 125 dual degree students, 14 MS-PD (MS part of dual degree), 149 BS and 68 masters degree students. Murthy is an alumnus of the institute and is widely credited with shaping India's IT industry. In 1969, he earned an MTech from IIT Kanpur.
