The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the National Institutes of Technology (NIT), the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) have all reported 98 student suicide deaths since the start of 2018. The IITs, which are renowned for their engineering programmes, reported the highest incidence of suicides, with 8,139 dropouts. The dropouts were from postgraduate or research programmes, the parliament's response stated.

28 students from the Other Backward Classes, nine from the Scheduled Castes, three from the Scheduled Tribes, and four from minority communities were among the students who committed themselves. The IITs saw the highest number of suicides—39—while central institutions saw the second-highest number—25. However, compared to the IITs, a number of the central universities have substantially bigger student numbers.
