The first-ever International Legal Conclave at Delhi University got underway on Saturday, with speakers from the legal profession, government, academia, and politics discussing decolonization and traditional Indian law.
The two-day event, organised by the DU Students' Union (DUSU), will be a primary forum for promoting an interesting exchange of experiences, insights, and skills. Two thousand persons attended the conclave's first day. Attorney General of India Venkataramani, Orissa High Court Judge Mruganka Sekhar Sahoo, Former Additional Solicitor General of India Dr Pinky Anand, and Proctor of Delhi University Professor Rajni Abbi spoke at the opening session.
"Ancient Indian Jurisprudence and Decolonising Indian Laws" was the session's theme, and the Attorney General stressed India's diversification while exploring old legal texts and decolonizing the legal system. Ideology, according to him, shapes history. Justice Sahoo emphasised the constitutional facets of Indian democracy. He also emphasised the necessity for the legal system to change to reflect how society is becoming.
The initiative taken by DUSU to engage young people during the conclave has been commended by Anand, an esteemed alumnus of the Law Centre at Delhi University. In his speech, Anand stressed that in modern society, there is an imperative to adapt legal values and called for a respectful coexistence of religion with secularism on the basis of dignity principles.
