Delhi University increases the promotion criteria for UG students

According to the authorities, Delhi University has raised the passing percentage for promotion to the following year from 50% to 63% for all undergraduate students. As a result, undergraduate students at all Delhi University (DU) colleges must now score 63% in their first and second semesters to be eligible for the promotion.

Students who actively represent DU in athletics, extracurricular activities, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the National Service Scheme (NSS), or other comparable activities may be exempt from the new passing percentage requirement. However, this is subject to approval from their college's responsible authorities.
 

According to an official from the university, the action was taken to address the shortcomings in executing the National Education Policy (NEP) Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022 at Delhi University.
 

"Under the former passing and promotion standards, a student qualified for promotion from the first to the second year of the course if they passed 50% of the tests combined in the first and second semesters. To be promoted, the pupils needed to complete seven papers and earn 22 credits, according to the official. 
 

"However, because all papers do not have the same credits under the NEP-UGCF 2022, it is possible that a student can get promoted to a subsequent year on passing just three papers of both the semesters and one general elective with only 36 percent score," a member of the committee which formulated the guidelines for the promotion criteria told PTI.
 

According to the official, a 12-member committee, including the principals of several DU colleges, including Miranda House, Kirori Mal College, and Lady Shri Ram, as well as the Dean of Academics and the Controller of Examination (COE), met on May 7 to review this shortcoming and provide recommendations.
 

These recommendations were subsequently approved by DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh on May 28.
 

The committee observed that the anomaly in implementing the NEP-UGCF 2022 "is causing loss to the student's academic growth and defeating the goals set in NEP 2020." It reached a consensus that the passing and promotion rules must be reviewed.
 

It recommended that students complete the academic criteria of 50% to be eligible for promotion to the following year. According to the committee member, it is also recommended that a student earn at least 28 credits, up from 22 credits, to advance to the following year.
