UGC Introduces ‘Sakhi Niwas’ for female students
Education News
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a new program called Sakhi Niwas (Working Women's Hostel), a part of the Umbrella scheme of Mission Shakti and a ray of hope for women working or seeking jobs. For as long as possible, it provides a haven with basic amenities like housing, food, and daycare for their kids. This program serves working women in urban, semi-urban, and even rural locations where there are opportunities for employment for women at a minimal cost. However, only the rental models for hostels for working women are covered by the Sakhi Niwas component.
"As you are aware, India's progress in STEM education sees a commendable 43% representation of women graduates. Women's labour force participation has increased from 23 3% to 37%. The vision of the Hon'ble Prime Minister is that women should lead in the Amrit Kaal, as without ensuring their progress, the overall progress of society is not possible," the Commission said in an official notification.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) (WWH) has recommended finding appropriate land or built-up areas within the hostel. If the universities grant such space, MCWD may cover the building and campus maintenance costs for establishing Working Women's Centers. Additionally, it has asked to get a list of 10 to 15 of these identified areas in the next 10 days.
