During the current fiscal year (FY25), the Rajasthan government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the scholarship initiative, with a planned expenditure of Rs 215 crore. This initiative is designed to provide crucial support to deserving students, enabling them to pursue their studies at top international and Indian institutions.
The government has renamed the initiative Swami Vivekananda Scholarship for Academic Excellence (SVS). The previous Congress administration established the Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship for Academic Excellence. When the project was introduced in 2021-22, it helped 73 students and received more than Rs 5 crore in funding. In 2023-24, the state government spent more than Rs 107 crore, with 372 students benefiting.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma passionately stated that the scholarship initiative underscores the government's profound dedication to empowering students through higher education, inspiring a brighter future for all.
The Official Said, “This initiative is more than just financial support; it is an investment in the future leaders, innovators, and changemakers of our society.”
"Its primary objective is to provide financial assistance to students native to Rajasthan who aspire to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, and post-doctoral research programmes. This support extends to universities ranked 1-150 globally according to the latest Times Higher Education ranking and the top 50 institutions in India as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)," the official added.
The scholarship program covers living costs, tuition, and other academic costs, making studying at prestigious universities possible.
According to the official, the pupils are divided into three groups based on their family income: E1 (less than Rs 8 lakh per year), E2 (families earning between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 25 lakh per year), and E3 (income above Rs 25 lakh per year).
For students in the E1 category, the scholarship program provides a comprehensive package. This includes up to Rs 50 lakh in tuition costs, a one-time advance payment of Rs 3 lakh for initial expenses, and a monthly stipend of Rs 1 lakh to cover living expenses. This financial support is designed to ensure that students can focus on their studies without the burden of financial worries. For the E2 category, the state government pays 85 per cent of tuition costs or a maximum grant of Rs 42.5 lakh, whichever is less. The E3 category students receive Rs 35 lakh or 70% of the tuition expenses, whichever is less.
