On Tuesday, the Centre assured the Rajya Sabha that it would take steps to protect the interests of the student community. The Upper House of Parliament raised a supplemental question about the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, responded.

“In so far as the allegations of a paper leak are concerned, the Supreme Court’s judgement has already come to us … I would only like to assure the member through you (the Chair) that the government is committed to the best interest of students and will do whatever is needed,” said Patel, adding that the first round of NEET-UG counselling would commence on August 14.

“We have already announced that the first round of counselling will begin on August 14, and as per the Supreme Court’s order, we will be holding the counselling in four rounds,” Patel said in the Rajya Sabha. In the House, she also announced that the fourth round of the NEET UG 2024 counselling will conclude on October 24. The Minister also shared available seats for UG and PG courses in private and government colleges.

There has been an increase of 88% in medical colleges from 387 to 731. Further, there has been an increase of 118% in MBBS seats from 51,348  to 1,12,112.
