International Education Day is a reminder for all to celebrate learning, which begins not with the school but from the day a child is born.
Education plays a vital role in moulding a society. It frames a person's character and influences the development of their worldview. On January 24, people worldwide mark the International Day of Education to emphasise the importance of education as a fundamental human right and a public duty. Through high-quality instruction and democratic engagement, the International Day of Education aims to advance gender equality, inclusion, and poverty eradication. International Education Day also encourages various educational approaches to unite bright minds, maintain harmony, and protect the environment.
History
The International Day of Education was declared on January 24 by a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 3, 2018, In honour of education's importance in promoting peace and development. The UNGA aimed to highlight and celebrate the positive effects that education can have. Nigeria and 58 other member states collaborated to draft resolution 73/25, "International Day of Education," which aims to advance inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education for all.
In addition, India observes National Education Day on November 11 of each year to honour Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the country's first education minister after independence.
The Theme of International Education Day 2024
According to the UNESCO website, the 6th International Day of Education will be observed with the theme "learning for lasting peace. " The globe is seeing a significant increase in violence, which is the theme's basis for relevance. The article aims to change and equip students with the information, morals, values, abilities, and behaviours needed to become peacemakers in their local communities.
This year, UNESCO is also honouring the vital role that teachers and education play in influencing and fostering improved practices throughout society.
