The deceased, S Jegadeeswaran (19), was a NEET candidate who hanged himself the day before his death after failing the NEET exam twice. The father of the deceased son later hanged himself at his home on Monday, according to Tamil Nadu police, unable to cope with the loss of his son.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin profusely pleaded with NEET applicants not to have any suicidal tendencies but to face life with self-confidence as he profusely expressed his condolences for the death of the Chennai student and his father. "Let their deaths be the last on the altar of NEET," the chief minister reportedly stated, according to ANI.

The Chief Minister declared earlier today that his administration will skip the Independence Day tea reception that Governor R.N. Ravi was planning because of his pro-NEET stance.

Governor Ravi had previously stated that if he "had the power to do so," he would never assent to the Tamil Nadu Assembly Bill exempting the state from the scope of the national test.
