Delhi HC Permits ST Stephen’s College To Hold Interviews For Minority Seat Admissions

The Delhi High Court has given St. Stephen's College permission to interview applicants for admission under the minority quota in addition to considering their results on the COMLEX exam. Jesus and Mary College were similarly given permission by a court led by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma to conduct interviews for the spots designated for students from underrepresented groups.

The executive council of Delhi University (DU), which insisted on giving the CUET 2023 score 100 per cent of the weight when considering applicants for the minority quota, made its judgement on December 8, 2022, and the two minority colleges asked the court to halt that decision. The petitions containing the applications were submitted by the colleges contesting the notification.

In addition to the two institutions' arguments, the petition of Sharon Ann George, a woman opposing the interviews for minority students at St Stephen's College and the CUET was also considered when the court issued its ruling.

St. Stephen's has the right to conduct interviews with a 15% weighting for minority students but not for non-minority students, the court ruled in its order, noting that in a previous decision, it had already discussed the extent to which DU could regulate the admission of minority students.
