Given its popularity in the region, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has the potential to become an international board in the Global South, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The Union Minister also stated to reporters on the sidelines of the G20 4th Working Group Meeting for Education that the UGC is in the process of establishing norms that will allow international universities to build up campuses in the country in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP).

“Recently, I had the chance to interact with a person from Singapore who runs CBSE schools there and in Japan. While CBSE schools in Singapore are for the diaspora, I was surprised to learn about the popularity of the CBSE board and pedagogy in Japan. I was told that mathematics and other subjects’ pedagogy is sought after,” he said.

When asked about international universities that are permitted to open campuses in India under the National Education Policy (NEP), Pradhan stated that the UGC is fine-tuning its standards to allow such offsite campuses. When asked about Indian colleges opening campuses abroad, the Minister replied cryptically that some concrete announcements would be made soon.
