THE ASIA RANKINGS 2023: 18 Indian universities rank within the top 200. However, JNU is absent
Education News
In the Times Higher Education's (THE) annual Asia university rankings for 2023, eighteen Indian universities have made their way into the top 200, with the Indian Institute of Science continuing to rank highest among Indian institutions at 48th. However, IISc has dropped six positions since last year. Overall, India has one top-50 university, four top-100 institutions, and 18 top-200 universities.
Last year, 17 colleges and universities were among the top 200. JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research is once again the second-highest ranked university, this time at 68th, up from 65th in 2022. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (77th), which made its debut in the top 200 this year, is followed by Mahatma Gandhi University (95th).
Despite the fact that the number of Indian colleges in the top 200 has increased slightly, several have seen a dip in performance. For example, IISc's rank has dropped for the fifth year in a row, from 27 in 2016 to 48 this year. JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research has also dropped three ranks this year, and IIT Ropar has dropped the most, by 63 positions, from 68th to 131st. The performance of IIIT Hyderabad, which rose from 174th to 106th this year, showed an upward trend.
This year, a few universities have dropped out of the top 200 entirely. The major names missing from the top 200 this year are Jawaharlal Nehru University (167th in 2022) and IIT Gandhinagar (120th last year).
