Assam Reserves 3 MBBS Seats In Two Medical Colleges For Bhutanese Nationals

On Wednesday, the Assam Cabinet authorised the reservation of three MBBS seats in the state's two medical institutions for citizens of Bhutan. At Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta, one seat will be set aside for citizens of Bhutan, while two seats at Nalbari Medical College will be designated for them. This announcement comes after Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Minister of Science and Technology, paid the college a visit earlier this year.
Prior to Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk's trip to India, a decision was made. Today, Wangchuk will depart Assam for his official tour to India. He'll be in India through November 10th.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, stated in an X post that Bhutan and India have a special bond that has become stronger over time. Knowledge and education have been essential to this unique tie for millennia.
The Assam cabinet adopted an amendment to the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam, (Regulation of Admission into first year MBBS-BDS Courses) Rule, 2017 (amended in 2023) in addition to reserving three MBBS seats for nationals of Bhutan. The Assam Cabinet also approved the payment of Rs 30 lakh in compensation to the state government by MBBS graduates in the event that they did not complete the one-year rural service bond requirement.
