The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has produced a Glycemic Index (GI) sensor that is suited for point-of-care detection and is reasonably priced. The ability of this sensor to instantly ascertain the GI of various food sources is essential for managing diabetes.

Professor Dipankar Bandyopadhyay of the Department of Chemical Engineering oversaw the research. The dietary sources are then divided into three categories: resistant starch (RS), slowly digestible starch (SDS), and rapidly digestible starch (RDS) based on the amount of maltose that is formed, which is subsequently detected electrochemically.

The amount of maltose produced is then electrochemically detected to classify the food sources into Rapidly Digestible Starch (RDS) and Slowly Digestible Starch (SDS) along with Resistant Starch (RS).

The research findings have been published in the journal Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering by the American Chemical Society. The paper was co-authored by Prathu Raja Parmar, Jiwajyoti Mahanta, Saurabh Dubey, Tapas Kumar Mandal, and Professor Dipankar Bandyopadhyay. The research has been funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)
