India's education ministry recently notified the Rajya Sabha that over 70 students committed suicide in higher education institutes (HEIs) between 2019 and 2023, with IITs accounting for the majority of deaths.

Despite passing the JEE, which is regarded as India's most difficult admission exam, pupils struggle to handle stress. The irony is that students with stress and depression need to get help. There may be a variety of causes, such as academic pressure, health issues (both physical and mental), family dynamics, financial burdens, placement-related challenges, a lack of life skills, low self-confidence, communication problems, relationship problems, addictions, and more.

In order to support students, teachers, and families psychologically during the Covid pandemic lockdown and ensure their mental and emotional well-being, the Ministry of Education (MoE) developed the Manodarpan programme in 2020. The MoE has encouraged the institutions to strengthen the system to aid in suicide prevention and corrective actions to address the potential cause.
