IIT Kanpur Olympiad-Based Admissions

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has introduced a new admission pathway for its BTech and BS programs, recognising the achievements of students who have excelled in international Olympiads. This initiative will begin in the academic year 2025-26, offering an alternative route for admission to talented students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in Olympiads across subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Informatics.

About the Program:

IIT Kanpur will reserve seats in five departments for students admitted through this Olympiad-based pathway:

  • Biological Sciences & Bioengineering
  • Computer Science & Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Economic Sciences
  • Mathematics & Statistics

This program is aimed at students who have undergone extensive training through Olympiad camps and have excelled in international Olympiad competitions. It provides a unique opportunity for students to gain admission without going through the traditional JEE (Advanced) process.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Candidates must be of the same age as those applying for JEE (Advanced).

  1. They must have completed their Class 10+2 (or equivalent) exams either in the year of admission or the previous year, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  1. Applicants must have participated in the relevant Olympiad training camp for the subject they are applying to.

 Selection Process:

The selection will take place in two stages:

  1. Department-Level Screening: Each department will review applicants based on their Olympiad rankings and shortlist candidates.

  1. Examination and Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be required to take a written examination. An interview may be conducted, depending on the department's requirements.

At the Institute level, a selection committee led by the Dean of Academic Affairs will consolidate the departmental recommendations to finalise the admission process.

 Important Dates:

  • Application Window: Opens in early March 2025 and close by the end of March 2025.
  • Screening and Examinations: Departments will conduct screenings and exams by May 2025.
  • Final List: Admissions will be finalised in June 2025.

Statement from IIT Kanpur:

Professor Shalabh, Dean of Academic Affairs at IIT Kanpur, commented on the initiative: “Our Olympiad-based admissions initiative is designed to recognise and reward the brightest minds who have excelled in international competitions. By offering this pathway, we aim to enhance the academic community at IIT Kanpur with individuals who bring diverse perspectives, innovative thinking, and exceptional analytical skills. This initiative will support innovation in key areas critical to India’s growth and global competitiveness.”

This new pathway not only recognises excellence in Olympiads but also provides a valuable alternative admission route for students who wish to pursue their passions at one of India’s leading institutions.
