Campus News

IIT Indore

IIT Indore introduced special shoes for the armed forces on 6 August 2024. These shoes are equipped with TENG Technology, which generates electricity with each step. They also have Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and a Global Positioning System (GPS) for Real-time tracking, enhancing operational coordination and safety.

Professor Suhas Joshi, director of IIT Indore, believes that the TENG technology in these shoes will be a game-changer for Army personnel. This versatile technology not only generates electricity with each step but can also power small electronic devices placed in the soles of the shoes. This versatility opens up a wide range of potential applications, from enhancing efficiency to boosting safety.

How will the Armed Forces Benefit?

These specialised shoes can enhance efficiency by powering small electronic devices, improve safety with precise location tracking for quick personnel location, and boost effectiveness in challenging environments through operational coordination.

The benefits of these shoes extend far beyond the military. They could be used in education to track school children's location, in sports to analyse athletes' performance, in healthcare to monitor individuals with Alzheimer's disease, and in industry to manage attendance and productivity in factories. The potential applications are vast and varied.

Initial Delivery and Future Impact

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has received the first batch of 10 pairs of these special shoes. The news sets new standards for wearable technology in defence.

IIT Indore's unique shoes for military personnel represent a notable milestone in wearable technology. With their sophisticated features and possible uses, these shoes are primed to influence military operations and beyond significantly. As technology advances, the innovations displayed by IIT Indore provide a look into the future of defence equipment and capabilities.
