President Droupadi Murmu emphasised inclusion and innovation in New Zealand's educational system on Thursday, saying education remained one of the country's top service exports. She spoke at the New Zealand International Education Conference in Wellington, where India is the 'Country of Honour' this year.
Murmu landed in New Zealand on Wednesday on the second phase of her three-nation tour. She was greeted by Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro with a traditional 'Maori Powhiri' ceremony and presented with the Royal Guard of Honour Thursday morning.
According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the leaders addressed collaboration in a variety of areas and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the scope of India-New Zealand economic relations through trade and commerce, providing a sense of reassurance about the stability of these relations.
At the education conference, the President also addressed the newly enacted NEP in India, noting that many Indian students can now attend excellent education at institutions around New Zealand.
“In 21st-century India, our education system plays a significant role. The country has produced leaders in diverse fields, who are contributing to India but also around the world,” she said.
Murmu added: “Education has always been close to my heart. I have seen and experienced first-hand the transformative power of education. Education is not just an individual endeavour, but also a vehicle for social change and nation building.”
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon later met with President Murmu, and the two discussed matters ranging from strengthening cultural connections to committing to regional and global security. The President stated that the two nations have been collaborating to solve climate change, world peace, and security issues.
