Universities have been advised to cease accepting students into the MPhil program by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The commission has requested that enrollment in MPhil programs be discontinued on the grounds that the degree is not recognized.

The commission discovered that certain universities are accepting new applications for admission to MPhil programs, which is why the UGC issued its notification.

The UGC has learned that certain universities are accepting new applications for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program. The commission stated, "In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the MPhil degree is not a recognized degree."

The MPhil program was discontinued last year, as announced by the commission. The University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022 were formulated by the UGC on November 7, 2022. Students who complete a four-year undergraduate degree with at least 75% of the possible points, or an equivalent grade, will be eligible for a PhD, according the updated PhD eligibility standards.

As a result, it is asked that the university administration act quickly to halt MPhil program admissions for the 2023–2024 academic year. Additionally, it states that students are discouraged against enrolling in the MPhil program.
