Assam’s Big Step to Prevent Child Marriage; Monthly Stipend for Girls in Higher Education
Education News
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, announced today at a news conference a significant government initiative. Over the next five years, the government will provide a monthly stipend to all female students from class 11 to post-graduation. This commitment, he emphasised, is a testament to the government's unwavering dedication to prevent child marriage and promote the financial independence of young women.
Speaking at the conference, Sarma stated that the cabinet had authorised the "Nijut Moina" program, estimating that Rs 1,500 crore would be spent on incentives for about 10 lakh females over the next five years.
"A married girl will not get the benefit. The only exception will be those married girls who are enrolled in PG courses, they will also benefit," he stated.
According to Sarma, the 'Nijut Moina' program is about more than just providing financial support. Its primary aim is to delay girls' marriages, enabling them to pursue higher education and become financially independent. He emphasised this is a crucial step towards a brighter future for the girls and their families.
He stated that all females in grades 11 and 12 will receive Rs 1,000 per month, degree students will receive Rs 1,250, and post-graduate girls will receive Rs 2,500.
"Except for daughters of ministers, MLAs and MPs, and those students studying in private colleges, all girls irrespective of their financial background will be included in the scheme. In June and July, during summer vacation, no money will be given. The stipend will be deposited to the bank accounts of the students for 10 months in a year," the Assam CM said. "This amount will be received by the students on the 11th of every month and the burden on the parents will be reduced to a large extent and they will be able to send their daughters to college and university," he noted.
