Assam's Cabinet Proposes A 10% NRI Quota For MBBS Seats, As Well As An Increase In Reservation For Six OBC/MOBC Tribes

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, recommended changes to the MBBS and BDS admission rules. After deducting 15% AIQ and other quotas, the state cabinet proposed a 10% reservation for NRI and NRI-sponsored applicants who passed the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The suggested revisions were announced during a meeting of the state cabinet. The chief minister recommended increasing reservations for six OBC and MOBC (non-creamy layer) communities.
“10% of total remaining MBBS seats after deduction of 15% All India Quota, Central Pool, North Eastern Council quota, Royal Govt of Bhutan quota seats to be reserved annually for NRI/NRI-sponsored students who have cleared NEET UG,” it said.
According to the official statement, the Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges of Assam (Regulation of Admission into 1st Year MBBS, BDS courses) Rule 2017 and subsequent amendment rules will be changed in light of the rise in MBBS seats in Assam.
Further, he also announced a 10% EWS quota for MBBS seats in six medical colleges - Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Jorhat, Tezpur and Barpeta.
