Now Admission in Indian Universities will be Twice a year
Education News
In a significant policy shift, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has agreed to allow higher education institutions to admit students twice a year beginning in the next academic year. Admissions will now be available in January/February and July/August, providing more opportunities for candidates who missed the first cycle due to delays in board results, health concerns, or personal reasons.
According to UGC Chairman Professor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, biannual admissions will help students by reducing enrollment wait times and enhancing motivation. It also permits industries to perform campus recruitment twice a year, increasing graduates' employment chances.
In the past, the UGC enabled biennial admissions for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online modalities, which resulted in roughly half a million more students enrolling. Encouraged by its success, the UGC expanded the policy to include regular-mode programmes.
This new policy not only aligns Indian universities with global best practices, potentially enhancing international collaborations and student exchange but also offers a flexible approach. While biennial admissions are optional, HEIs can adapt their policies to this system, opening up new possibilities for growth and development.
Biannual admissions are projected to boost the Gross Enrollment Ratio and help it become a global Study Destination', as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
