Why is Engineer’s Day Celebrated

Yes, Today, 15th September, is observed in India as the Lord of Creators Day, “Engineers Day”. The first engineer, sometimes referred to as the Father of Engineering, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, was born on this day. All civil engineers are recognised for their services to the development of the country during the general celebration. 

History of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya
M. Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 in a Telugu family in the Karnataka town of Chikkaballapur. Visvesvaraya left his birthplace after completing his formal education to pursue a BA at the University of Madras.

Visvesvaraya began his career as a government of British India employee, working in the Middle Eastern regions of the Bombay Presidency and other British colonies. He then worked for Hyderabad State. He also worked as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. 

Visvesvaraya was a Civil engineer, statesman, and philanthropist who made a huge impact on the nation's development. His soul left his body in 1962, but Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya left behind a significant body of work that produced ingenious engineering technologies. 

Interesting facts about Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

• M. Visvesvaraya received recognition for his work in flood prevention and irrigation systems.
• Automatic floodgates were created and improved by Sir MV in 1903, and they were put at the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune.
• He helped in controlling the Musi River floods by building an advanced sewage infrastructure.
• He helped with the planning of the highway that connects Tirumala and Tirupati.
• His membership in the London Institution of Civil Engineers was elevated to honorary status.
• M. Visvesvaraya established the Bangalore Agricultural University while serving as the Diwan of Mysore.
• The Government Engineering College in Karnataka, which is today known as the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, was established by Visvesvaraya in 1917.
• In 1955, M Visvesvaraya was given the Bharat Ratna award.

Other than India, his birth anniversary is celebrated as National Engineer’s Day in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. The theme for Engineer’s Day 2023 is “Engineering for a Sustainable Future”.
