The University Grants Commission (UGC) has stated that the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) shall be the minimum requirement for direct recruitment to the post of assistant professor in all universities and colleges.
The amended regulations on the minimum credentials for the employment of teachers and academic staff announced on June 30, will take effect on July 1, 2023.

According to the UGC notice, "NET/SET/SLET shall be the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor for all Higher Education Institutions." The change repeals the prior UGC sub-regulation. This amendment intends to maintain and improve educational standards in higher education institutions by requiring candidates to pass the necessary eligibility examinations for the position of assistant professor.

The UGC chairperson, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, announced the announcement on Twitter, stating that a PhD is not required for employment as an assistant professor. The UGC further noted that the new regulations would help to streamline the recruitment process and ensure that only qualified applicants are recruited as assistant professors.
