The freshly enrolled undergraduate students of Kolkata's Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College (AJC Bose College) are required to sign an affidavit agreeing not to wear clothing that the college deems "indecent," notably torn jeans, on college property.

"New 1st SEM classes will begin on and from 07.08.2023. Torn Jeans are strictly prohibited. Formal dresses are allowed only," it states as a warning.

The college has a long history of enforcing a rigorous dress code. The principal had given a similar warning regarding damaged jeans the year before. In spite of this, some students persisted in wearing "indecent" clothing, which prompted a more assertive position this year.

"Torn clothes do not fit the decorum of an educational institute," said principal Purna Chandra Maity. Students are expected to abide by the college's policies and understand proper attire for a formal setting.

This statement is in line with the college's policy that only formal clothing is permitted on campus. The entrance notification on the institution's website makes clear the requirements for its dress code.
