After Earning Their Degrees, Indian Students Will Be Able To Stay In Italy For An Additional Year

The two governments have announced that Indian students who choose to remain in Italy after receiving their degrees will now be permitted to remain in the nation for an extra year.

According to PIB on Wednesday, the proposal of the Ministry of External Affairs to sign and ratify the Migration and Mobility Agreement between the Governments of the Republic of India and the Italian Republic has received ex-post facto approval from the Union Cabinet, which is presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Per the agreement, Indian students who complete their academic and vocational studies in Italy and want to gain some first professional experience might be granted temporary residence in Italy for a maximum of 12 months. 

In 2022, 5,897 Indian students were in Italy on study visas, according to government data. There were 4791 Indian students studying in India in 2019, 3211 in 2020, and 3008 in Italy in 2021.

Under the current Flows Decree, the Italian government has additionally set aside a quota of 5,000, 6000, and 7000 non-seasonal Indian workers for 2023, 2024, and 2025 (the total reserved quota for non-seasonal workers stands at 12000). Furthermore, in accordance with the existing Flows Decree, the Italian side has set aside a quota of 3000, 4000, and 5000 seasonal Indian workers for 2023, 2024, and 2025 (bringing the total reserved quota for seasonal workers to 8000).
