'This Will Bring Down The Quality,' Say PhD Students And Academics About The UGC's Decision To Hire Assistant Professors
Education News
The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced on Wednesday that, instead of a PhD, the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) would be the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the post of assistant professor in all universities and colleges.
According to the new standards, UGC-NET/SLET/SET is the minimal criterion for direct recruitment as an Assistant Professor for those with a Master's degree, whereas PhD degree holders are eligible for direct recruitment and are exempt from UGC-NET/SLET/SET.
Because we go through a tough learning process over the 5-6 years of the PhD degree, it will undoubtedly lower the quality of associate professors. There is undoubtedly a disadvantage to scrapping MPhil, which prepares students significantly for the massive effort they undertake throughout their doctoral studies. Furthermore, universities will continue to favour PhD holders, at least for permanent posts.
