Following the suggestions of NEP 2020, Delhi University is scheduled to present a request to the Executive Council to partially soften the UGC's notification regarding the discontinuation of MPhil courses. It plans to extend the validity of two of its MPhil programmes in clinical psychology and psychiatric social work into the 2025-2026 academic year.
The Academic Council and Executive Council of the University resolved in 2021 to stop MPhil programmes beginning with the academic year 2022-24, in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020.
The agenda of the upcoming meeting is to highlight the concerns raised by the Dean, Faculty of Medical Science, via its two letters dated 11.08.2023 and 06.10.2023 submitted to the Secretary, UGC, which call for the resumption of the M.Phil. (Clinical Psychology) Course at IHBAS
The institution had previously appealed to the UGC to urge the reinstatement of the MPhil programme at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) as a stopgap solution for the benefit of students and patient care until the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) issued a definitive ruling.
Notably, in response to the university's request, the UGC issued a public notification on January 30 extending the validity of the MPhil. In Clinical Psychology and MPhil in Psychiatric Social Work until 2025-26. The decision was made as a partial amendment to the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022, which were notified in December 2022. According to the UGC's 2022 regulations, higher education institutes can no longer provide MPhil programmes.
