Transformation Ahead PU Campus in Sector 25 to Undergo Major Revamp

Panjab University (PU) is embarking on a significant transformation of its Sector 25 campus following the recent approval of its Master Plan by the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC). This strategic development aims to reduce the university's dependence on its main campus in Sector 14.

The CHCC approved the Master Plan of the PU extension (south campus) and the 'Street for People' initiative in Sector 15 during its 23rd meeting, chaired by Mr Rajeev Verma, adviser to the Administrator of UT Chandigarh. The approved Master Plan envisions a comprehensive redevelopment of the south campus, incorporating high-rise buildings that will house hostels, various educational departments, and residential areas.

The Master Plan outlines the development of residential areas for university employees, designated zones for student activities, and additional facilities to support the campus community. The Sector 25 campus, which serves as an extension of the main campus, spans 166.12 acres and is set to undergo substantial changes.

According to an official statement, the Master Plan was designed according to the Chandigarh Building Rules 2017 and other relevant regulations. Previously, the PU campus adhered to norms specific to educational buildings. However, given the limited land availability and the need for efficient land use, the university was advised to conform to integrated project norms. As a result, PU revised its plans to align with these standards, adjusting land use, zoning, floor area ratio (FAR), ground coverage, and parking regulations.

The revised plans underwent an extensive review, receiving approval from the CHCC subcommittee on 5th July 2024, before being presented to the central committee. Registrar Y P Verma confirmed, "The Master Plan for the Sector 25 campus, which covers 166 acres, has been approved after being pending for several years.

The integrated construction norms outlined in the plan have been approved by the CHCC. Of the total land, 70% is designated for academic purposes, 25% for commercial use, and the remainder will be allocated accordingly. Future multi-story constructions will benefit from an improved FAR."

Additionally, the construction of a technology block dedicated to startup and incubation activities is already underway, further enhancing the campus's functionality and growth potential. The approval of Panjab University's Master Plan for the Sector 25 campus marks a pivotal development in the university's efforts to expand and optimise its facilities.

By transforming the campus into a self-sufficient hub with integrated residential, academic, and commercial zones, PU addresses land scarcity issues and enhances its infrastructure to serve its community better. This strategic overhaul, guided by the latest building norms and planning standards, will enable PU to support its academic and administrative functions more efficiently while fostering innovation and growth through dedicated facilities like the technology block.
