The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kharagpur) and the Indian Navy have inked an agreement at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi to foster technological progress, new solutions, and collaborative research and development. Rear Admiral K Srinivas, assistant head of materiel (dockyard and refit) at Naval Headquarters, and Rintu Banerjee, dean of research and development at IIT Kharagpur, inked the agreement in front of IIT Kharagpur director Virendra Kumar Tewari.
The strategic partnership focuses on joint research and development endeavours between teams from the Indian Navy and IIT Kharagpur. The deal will be coordinated by INS Shivaji in Lonavala. This alignment represents a shift towards a symbolic link between academia and the military, creating an environment conducive to innovation and knowledge sharing.
"This partnership will promote academic cooperation, enhance scientific understanding of technologies related to defence and undertake research in mutually beneficial areas including taking up research projects by Indian Navy sponsored students on the topics pertaining to areas of interest of Indian Navy," said Prof. V K Tewari, Director of IIT Kharagpur
Propulsion systems, systems and controls, instrumentation and sensors, industrial engineering and operational research, nanotechnology and MEMS, fluid hydrodynamics, computer-aided design, mechanical design of systems and equipment, surface treatment, acoustics, reliability, quantum computing and quantum mechanics, AI, ML, Big data analytics, mechatronics, robotics, and so on are among the areas of study. Other particular development research in computational fluid dynamics for hull appendage contact, hull sea inlet interaction, aerodynamic/plume trajectory, ship structure optimisation, steel technology, and other technical disciplines will be included.
